Four Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) educators were recently recognized for their outstanding work and leadership in computer science education by the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE). The awards were presented during the annual DOE Math and Computer Science Conference and Awards Gala.
The honored educators were nominated by colleagues from across the state and selected by the Georgia DOE for their significant contributions to advancing computer science education in Georgia. The following GCPS educators received recognition:
Leadership Excellence in Computer Science Award
Honoree: Sallie Holloway, Director of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science
This award recognizes a district leader who has demonstrated exceptional commitment and achievements in promoting computer science education. Holloway was acknowledged for her leadership in advocating for computer science and was honored during the Georgia Computer Science Conference Gala.
Leadership Engagement in Computer Science Award
Honoree: Laura Ventura, K-5 Instructional Specialist of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science
Ventura was recognized for her efforts to provide inclusive and equitable computer science education across all grade levels. Her dedication to preparing students for the digital age earned her the award, which was presented at the Georgia Computer Science Conference Gala.
Computer Science Professional Learning Community Engagement Award
Honoree: Batavia Sumlin, Computer Science Teacher, Paul Duke STEM High School
Sumlin was awarded for her contributions to fostering professional growth and community involvement within the GaDOE computer science educational community. Her work in enhancing student achievement through engagement was highlighted during the Georgia Computer Science Conference Gala..
Tech Trailblazer Award
Honoree: Michelle Ruhl, Computer Science Teacher, Sugar Hill Elementary
Ruhl was honored for her innovative use of technology in education. The Tech Trailblazer Award recognizes educators who pioneer the integration of cutting-edge technology to enhance learning and teaching. Her award was also presented during the Georgia Computer Science Conference Gala.
