Beaver Ridge, Craig, Freeman’s Mill, and Harmony Elementary Schools have been recognized by the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) as John Hancock Award schools for their achievements in writing.

Craig Elementary and Freeman’s Mill Elementary have been named 2024-2025 John Hancock Banner and Ribbon of Distinction recipients. Beaver Ridge Elementary and Harmony Elementary have been named 2024-2025 John Hancock Banner and Ribbon of Proficiency recipients. The John Hancock Award celebrates schools that have demonstrated exceptional instruction in cursive writing.

“We are incredibly proud of Craig, Freeman’s Mill, Beaver Ridge, and Harmony Elementary Schools for being recognized by the GaDOE with the John Hancock Award,” GCPS Chief Learning Officer DeNelle West shares. “This recognition reflects the dedication of our educators and the hard work of students mastering a timeless skill that supports literacy and historical understanding. It also highlights our continued commitment to equipping students with the tools they need to succeed both in and beyond the classroom.”

Learning cursive contributes to student success by supporting literacy, fine motor skills, and cognitive abilities. Additionally, it enables students to connect more deeply with historical texts.

To apply, schools at every level —elementary, middle, and high —can submit a portfolio of students' cursive abilities. This year, more than 300 schools submitted for the statewide recognition.
