More than a dozen Gwinnett County public schools have been named 2024-25 Literacy Leaders by the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE). The honor recognizes schools for achievement or growth in the percentage of students reading at or above grade level. The Literacy Leader award underscores the importance of grade-level reading in 3rd and 6th grades and requires greater improvement from schools with lower achievement levels.

The following schools were recognized for increasing the percentage of students reading at or above grade level:

  • Anderson-Livsey ES
  • Archer HS
  • Coleman MS
  • Craig ES
  • Crews MS
  • Dacula HS
  • Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology
  • Harmony ES
  • Lawrenceville ES
  • Level Creek ES
  • Magill ES
  • Meadowcreek ES
  • New Life Academy of Excellence
  • North Gwinnett HS
  • North Gwinnett MS
  • Pharr ES
  • Riverside ES
  • Roberts ES
  • Suwanee ES
  • Taylor ES

These schools in GCPS are among a select group of 406 from around the state recognized as 2024-25 Literacy Leaders. The number of schools recognized this year increased by eight compared to the previous year, reflecting continued progress and dedication from our educators, families, and students.

“Reading opens every door to learning,” said Dr. Al Taylor, Interim Superintendent of Gwinnett County Public Schools. “I’m proud of these schools for helping more students reach and exceed grade-level expectations in literacy. Their dedication reflects the heart of our mission—ensuring every student can read, learn, and succeed. While we celebrate this progress, we know our work continues until all students are confident, capable readers.”

Awards were given based on the outlined criteria at the elementary and middle-school levels, and at the high-school level based on the American Literature EOC, which is the state test for English Language Arts (ELA) in high school. Literacy Leader qualifications use the Georgia Milestones Reading Status indicator, which is based on the Lexile score associated with students’ performance on a subset of questions on the ELA assessment.

The GaDOE began honoring schools as Literacy Leaders for the 2023-24 school year, recognizing the critical role of literacy in students’ educational success.
