Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) Superintendent Dr. Calvin J. Watts is proud of the schools and the work educators do to prepare students for the future. “Congratulations are in order for our Math Leader schools and to everyone who worked hard and smart to support student success in math,” Dr. Watts shares. “This achievement shows the tireless dedication of our teachers, principals, and staff, the hard work of our students, and the wonderful support of our families. I am continuously inspired by Team GCPS’ commitment to student success!”
Schools were recognized for achievement or growth in the percentage of students scoring at the Proficient Learner level or above in mathematics. The criteria for the 2023-2024 Math Leader Awards recognize the crucial importance of numeracy skills in 5th and 8th grades and require higher growth from schools with lower achievement levels.
“Our teachers are dedicated to building a strong foundation in numeracy skills that goes beyond test scores,” GCPS Chief Learning Officer DeNelle West shares. “This recognition speaks to the innovative, student-centered strategies our educators bring into the classroom every day. Through hands-on learning, real-world problem-solving, and targeted support, they are equipping students to achieve proficiency and make impressive growth in mathematics.”
Awards were given at the elementary, middle, and high school levels based on the Algebra: Concepts and Connections EOC, the state test for mathematics in high school. The GCPS schools are among a select group of 624 that met the qualifications to be recognized as “Math Leaders.”
