Sirish Subash, a former Crews Middle School student and rising 9th grader at Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology has been named one of 10 finalists in the 2024 3M Young Scientist Challenge.

The 3M Young Scientist Challenge, the nation’s premier middle school science competition, invites students in grades 5-8 to compete for an exclusive mentorship with a 3M scientist, a $25,000 grand prize, and the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.” This annual competition encourages students to identify everyday problems and propose innovative solutions.

“Sirish’s creativity and dedication to solving real-world problems through science are truly commendable,” says Crews Middle’s Principal Cindy Moffett. “We are incredibly proud of his achievements and look forward to seeing his future contributions to the field of science.”

This year’s 3M Young Scientist Challenge finalists, aged 13 to 15, submitted videos explaining the science behind their proposed solutions. A panel of judges, including 3M scientists and educational leaders, evaluated the entries based on creativity, scientific knowledge, and communication effectiveness. The grand prize winner will be announced in October following the competition’s final event in St. Paul, Minnesota.

This is not the first honor Sirish has received. Last spring, he earned the Agricultural Research Service Award for Excellence in Agricultural Research at the 76th Georgia Science & Engineering Fair. He was recognized in the Junior Division for his invention, PestiSCAND, an AI-based handheld pesticide detector.
