GCPS students to speak to astronauts on International Space Station
- GCPS News
Students at Woodward Mill Elementary School will soon be able to speak to people who are not on this planet. On Thursday, February 20, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., students at the school are scheduled to speak to astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS).
Woodward Mill Elementary is one of a handful of schools selected by the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) to host Amateur Radio contacts with ISS crew members. Woodward Mill Elementary School Principal Dr. Sonya Brown is excited about the interaction. “This is an amazing opportunity for our students,” Dr. Brown shares. “Thanks to the ARISS program, our students will have the unique chance to speak directly with astronauts currently aboard the International Space Station. This once-in-a-lifetime experience will allow our students to engage with real astronauts, ask questions about life in space, and deepen their understanding of STEM fields like astronomy, engineering, and communications.”
The primary goal of the ARISS program is to engage young people in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) activities and raise their awareness of space communication, radio communication, space exploration, and related areas of study and career possibilities.
