Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) respects the First Amendment rights of its students and their right to voice concerns, including those related to gun violence in schools. We understand that some GCPS students may plan to participate in walkouts being organized across the state to show support for the Apalachee High School community and raise awareness about gun safety.
Our school administrators have met with student leaders to discuss appropriate ways for them to exercise their First Amendment rights while maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment. We have emphasized that while students may exercise their rights, any actions that cause disruptions to the school day will result in appropriate disciplinary action, as would be the case on any other day.
GCPS is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all students and staff while fostering an environment that supports thoughtful, respectful dialogue. We encourage students to continue working with their school leaders to find constructive ways to advocate for change.
