Carmen Smith, an advanced content math teacher for 3rd through 5th grades at Sugar Hill Elementary School, is one of two Georgia math finalists for the 2024 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). Stephanie Aseltine, a science teacher at Simonton Elementary School, is one of three finalists for the science award.

Established by Congress in 1983, the PAEMST awards are the highest honors bestowed by the U.S. government specifically for K-12 STEM teachers, covering science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and computer science. Each year, the president has the authority to recognize up to 108 exemplary teachers.

“Mrs. Aseltine is an exceptional teacher whose passion for science and student learning generates excitement and enthusiasm in students,” says Simonton Elementary Principal Tamara Perkins. “In her classroom, students feel comfortable taking on challenging tasks, exploring, and thinking critically. She is respected by her peers and brings out the best in all who have the pleasure of working with her,” Perkins shares. The PAEMST award celebrates educators who demonstrate a profound understanding of the subjects they teach and the ability to inspire and enable student success.

Expressing her gratitude, Smith shares, “I am honored to represent Sugar Hill, the Lanier Cluster, Gwinnett, and the State of Georgia at this level.” Smith has dedicated a decade of her professional life to pursuing this prestigious accolade, marking a significant milestone in her career.

The next step in the award process is for the National Science Foundation (NSF) to evaluate and judge the finalists recommended for consideration by the president of the United States. This phase typically lasts two to five years before the winners are ultimately announced.

The NSF notified finalists of their selection via a virtual recognition ceremony, and PAEMST honored state winners. Smith was officially celebrated at the Georgia Department of Education (GADOE) Math Con Gala during the week of June 17, and Aseltine will be recognized during the Georgia Science Teachers Association (GSTA) conference in February 2025.
