GCPS Book Mobile - Pow
  • GCPS News

Over the next four months, the Gwinnett County Public Schools’ (GCPS) Book Mobiles will travel around Lilburn to encourage students to read, thanks in part to the Lilburn Woman’s Club (LWC). The LWC, a subsidiary of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, is sponsoring visits to eight GCPS schools, where students can choose books they’d like to take home and keep. Knight Elementary School was the first stop in January. The next event will be held on Monday, February 10, at Lilburn Elementary School.

LWC Book Mobile Project Coordinator Susan Allred is excited about the visits. “We are thrilled to support literacy in our local schools,” she says. “LWC supports many types of programs and needs in our community. However, after researching our local needs, we felt the Book Mobile program would reach a large number of students and fulfill a need to increase literacy.”

The remaining events will be held at the following locations:

  • February 10 and 11 - Minor ES

  • February 18 and 19 - Hopkins ES

  • February 28 - Arcado ES

  • March 18 - Camp Creek ES

  • April 4 - Head ES

  • May 12 - Mountain Park ES

The LWC will provide more than 8,000 students across eight elementary schools with the opportunity to build their personal libraries and encourage them to develop better reading habits. For more than five years, the LWC has provided dictionaries and resource books to all 3rd-grade students at the eight elementary schools in Lilburn. Additionally, it provides resources and scholarships to middle and high school students while supporting their programs.

Jan Wilson, GCPS Coordinator of Library Media Instruction, says the partnership with the LWC will have a positive impact on students. “Our mission is to put books into kids’ hands. We want them to read because they want to,” Wilson shares. “To achieve this, we focus on three key factors: choice, variety, and access. Our shelves are filled with thousands of books, ensuring every child can find something they love."
