Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) is enhancing security measures at athletic events. Starting Friday, September 27, GCPS will begin rolling out the Evolv weapons detection system at GCPS stadiums. The cutting-edge system uses advanced sensors and artificial intelligence to quickly and accurately detect potential threats, allowing for a smooth and non-intrusive entry process for attendees.
The Evolv system uses state-of-the-art, low-frequency electromagnetic fields, and advanced software algorithms to detect concealed weapons, including firearms, knives, and explosive devices. Unlike traditional metal detectors, the Evolv system can differentiate between weapons and non-threatening metal objects, such as cell phones and keys, reducing the need for secondary screenings and minimizing disruptions.
GCPS Chief of Schools, Dr. Al Taylor, highlights the importance of the Evolv system in enhancing safety at school events. “Implementing this advanced weapon detection technology at stadiums significantly improves security in high-traffic environments,” Dr. Taylor shares. “The Evolv system's ability to quickly and accurately identify potential threats while minimizing delays ensures a safer experience for students, staff, and attendees. As we expand its use across the district, this technology will play a critical role in maintaining a secure atmosphere at our events, without disrupting the flow of entry.”
Spectator Guidelines for Using Evolv Technology
- Entry Points: Look for marked entry points with Evolv scanners and follow the signs or staff directions.
- Keep Your Items: You can keep personal items like phones, keys, and wallets on you while passing through the scanners.
- Follow Staff Instructions: If something is flagged, you may need a secondary screening—just follow staff directions for a quick process.
- Arrive Early: To avoid delays at busy events, plan to arrive early for screening.
GCPS is also enforcing clear bag rules at all sporting events:
- One clear bag (up to 12"x 6"x 12") and one small clutch (up to 4.5"x 6.5") are allowed.
- A gallon-sized Ziploc bag can also be used.
- Diaper bags, small camera bags, and medically necessary items are allowed but will be searched.
The deployment of Evolv Technology aligns with the district's broader safety initiatives, including increased personnel training, upgraded surveillance systems, and continued collaboration with local law enforcement.
As we introduce this new technology, we ask for the cooperation of all attendees in following the guidelines provided at each event. Information on which events will feature Evolv Technology and additional details about the entry process will be communicated through the schools and posted on the district's website.
