Gwinnett’s four-year graduation rate is the highest in a decade

The Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) Class of 2024 has propelled the district to its highest graduation rate in a decade. According to data from the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE), these students have set a new benchmark for academic success in GCPS, showcasing their hard work, resilience, and commitment to excellence.

GCPS’ 2024 4-year Adjusted Cohort Graduation Rate (ACGR) is 84.1%, an increase from 81.9% for the Class of 2023. The statewide rate for Georgia’s Class of 2024 is 85.4%, up from 84.4% for the previous year. In fact, the Class of 2018 was the last GCPS graduating class to achieve a higher graduation rate than the state. GCPS has also steadily closed the gap with the state, reducing the difference from 2.5 percentage points in 2023 to 1.3 percentage points in 2024.

GCPS Superintendent Dr. Calvin J. Watts says the scores are encouraging. “We celebrate the amazing success of the Class of 2024 for reaching the highest graduation rate in a decade and meeting our 84% goal. We are proud of the hard work and dedication of our students, families, teachers, principals, and staff,” Dr. Watts shares. “This milestone reflects our collective progress, but we know there is still much work to be done. Our commitment remains steadfast—to ensure that every Gwinnett County Public Schools student is not only graduating but is also prepared and ready for a bright and successful future.”

The GaDOE calculates the 4-year ACGR for each school district in the state per the federal requirements. This rate is the number of students who graduate in four years with a regular high school diploma divided by the number of students who form the adjusted cohort for the graduating class. From the beginning of 9th grade, students entering that grade for the first time form a cohort that is subsequently “adjusted” by adding any students who transfer into the cohort during the next three years and subtracting any students who transfer out.

     GaDOE data also shows:

  • 21 high schools had rates above 80%.
  • 19 high schools had Class of 2024 rates higher than Class of 2023.
  • 12 GCPS high schools had graduation rates at or above 90%.
  • 11 GCPS high schools also achieved their highest graduation rate in a decade or since their opening!

“These results are the result of the strong partnership between our students, educators, families, and supporters. Together, we have shown that when we maintain a common focus and commitment, our students benefit,” Dr. Nikki Mouton, GCPS Deputy Superintendent of Academic Services, shares. “Let’s continue this momentum and keep building brighter paths for our students!”

While all states use the same calculation, each sets its requirements for students to earn a regular high school diploma. Georgia has some of the highest requirements in the nation for students to graduate with a regular diploma, with GCPS requirements surpassing those of the state.

The 4-Year ACGR and other highlights from the Class of 2024 will be shared during the Gwinnett County Board of Education Work Session on October 17 at 2 p.m.
