The impressive academic achievement and strong SAT and ACT performance of 13 Lanier High School seniors earned the notice of Alabama A&M University, and significant scholarships for each and every student. A delegation of Alabama A&M administrators and student representatives, led by the university’s President, Dr. Daniel K. Wims, recently visited Lanier High to present scholarships worth $709,000 to 13 seniors.

“In November 2025, we organized a college visit to Alabama A& M, and the students had an opportunity to tour the campus and attend a football game,” shares Lanier High Principal Dr. Christopher Martin. “Later, we invited [the university] to come out to do a college presentation with several students, and they were impressed by the number of our students who wanted to attend Alabama A&M. Also, they were pleased by their high student achievement in grades and SAT/ACT scores.”

Lanier High senior Hans Alexis plans to major in Finance and recalls the positive experience of his visit to Alabama A&M University. “It widened my expectations of what out-of-state universities and colleges were like,” he says. “I never knew what other schools outside the state would be like. [The trip] left an overall positive impact on how I perceive other schools and what opportunities are out there waiting for me.”

Lanier HS seniors listen to Dr. Christopher Martin

Ashden Hunter intends to study Hospitality Management with a Health focus and a minor in Business Management. “Through mentorship in high school, I learned how important Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) are for students,” Hunter shares. “From that point on, I knew that I had to attend an HBCU. Now that I am officially a Bulldog, I am ready to thrive. I want to use my degree to focus on health within the hospitality industry. I am not just going to college to get a degree but to build a career and make the most of this opportunity.”

Dr. Martin adds, “These awards highlight not only the students’ academic commitment, leadership, and dedication, but also the strong support system that has guided them throughout their journey. As they prepare for the next chapter, these students are equipped with the skills, confidence, and opportunities needed to pursue their goals and make a positive impact in the world. I am incredibly excited to celebrate our students for earning these scholarships and proudly showcasing our mission of empowering them to learn, lead, and succeed.”
