Meadowcreek High School’s RoboMustangs robotics team has won the Albany qualifier for the Peachtree District Championship Event in the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) National Robotics Competition. This is the first victory for the RoboMustangs in seven years, including five years when the team was inactive. Students and staff at Meadowcreek High are proud of the team’s impressive comeback as a first-time competitor.
The 12-member team dedicated nearly 100 hours to planning, building, and strategizing to create its competition robot last year. In FIRST® National Robotics Competitions, teams form alliances and compete against others in a challenging field game. Despite being the last team selected for an alliance, the RoboMustangs emerged victorious.
Robert White, a Meadowcreek High teacher and co-sponsor of the RoboMustangs, enjoys mentoring students. “Our role is to ensure the team has what they need to succeed, whether that’s robot parts, mentors, or lunch,” White shares. “It has been a pleasure to watch them grow into independent, capable engineers.”
The team, led by 9th - 12th-grade students, focused on core values such as creativity, cooperation, respect, and service throughout the competition. These principles are central to the FIRST Robotics program, which aims to prepare students for future careers through hands-on, project-based learning that aligns with Georgia’s academic standards.
Sara Konecny, a Meadowcreek High teacher and co-sponsor of the club, says competing in events like this helps students realize their potential. “It is important to show students that they can build robots, engineer the future, and achieve whatever they set their minds to,” Konecny shares.
