Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) Superintendent Dr. Calvin J. Watts has selected 48 high school and 54 middle school students to join his 2024-25 Student Advisory Council (SSAC).
“I’m excited to connect with our Student Advisory Council members and listen to their perspectives. I believe this council is one way we can ensure that we continue to make decisions that benefit all students,” says Dr. Watts. “Elevating student voice is not only called out in our strategic plan as a goal, but we know elevating student voice fosters stronger student engagement, better communication, and increases trust between students and educators—all crucial elements for academic success.”
Nearly 650 students applied for the council this year. Due to high interest, GCPS also selected 93 alternates who will step in if a member from their school or cluster cannot participate. Alternates will also have opportunities to contribute through committees, workgroups, and surveys.
Chief Engagement Officer Melissa Laramie expressed excitement for the council’s impact, stating, “We’re thrilled with the interest and diversity in this year’s council. The improvements in our meetings, suggested by last year’s council, will make this year’s gatherings even more engaging and relevant.”
2024-25 Student Advisory Council Snapshot
- Representation from 52 middle, high, and specialty schools
- 49% qualify for free or reduced meals
- 32% are male
- 65% are in the gifted program
- Ethnicity breakdown: 23% Asian/Pacific Islander, 45% African American, 19% Hispanic, 12% White
- Our council also includes multilingual students and students receiving special education services.
Dr. Watts sought students for this year’s council who will express views and opinions honestly, openly, constructively, and respectfully; work collaboratively with others, and be willing to offer suggestions, innovative solutions, and input on areas for improvement in a wide range of topics facing our schools. These students will meet with Dr. Watts throughout the year to share their ideas, provide feedback, and help improve the district while building leadership skills.
