Paul Duke STEM High School and Parkview High School proved they are among the best high schools in the nation at the National Technology Student Association (TSA) competition this summer. Paul Duke STEM High placed first in the Data Science and Analytics category and third in the Forensic Science category. Parkview High placed second in both the Board Game Design category and System Control Technology.

In the Data Science and Analytics category, Paul Duke STEM High students Meagan Harris and Rohan Kumar conducted and presented research on the carcinogenic effects of microplastic exposure in yeast and also performed on-site data analysis as part of the competition.

“Our students continue to amaze with their dedication and innovative research. Meagan and Rohan’s 1st place achievement at the national Technology Student Association competition highlights not only their mastery of Data Science and Analytics but also their commitment to addressing real-world challenges like microplastic exposure,” says Tim Hemans, GCPS Executive Director of College and Career Development. “But they aren’t the only ones who excelled. We are proud of all the students at both schools who represented themselves and GCPS exceedingly well.”

TSA competitions provide an opportunity for students to take learning beyond the classroom and explore topics of career interest. Participants identify a societal issue, collect or compile data from various sources about the issue, and then produce documentation and a digital scientific poster about their findings. Students engage in hands-on activities, solve real-world problems, and compete in various categories, including robotics, coding, engineering design, and data science. Hemans adds, “Competing at this prestigious event and conducting on-site analysis with precision is a testament to the strength of our programs and the bright future of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in GCPS.”

TSA is a national organization focused on advancing STEM education through student-led competitions and leadership development. The organization also fosters a sense of community and prepares students for future careers in technology and engineering fields.
