PTA / PTO / PTSA
GCPS has a strong commitment to family and community engagement. As the school district’s primary outreach division, the Engagement Office is responsible for helping share information about districtwide engagement opportunities, including Parent Leadership Organizations at our local schools.
In GCPS, our goal is to educate and support the development of the whole child – academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally – so that each and every student in GCPS can experience success in GCPS, and the college and career they choose. Your participation as a parent or guardian is crucial in achieving this goal.
Volunteer Organizations - (Booster Clubs, PTAs, and Foundations)
The following procedure has been established by the Gwinnett County Board of Education as a basic guideline for the establishment and operation of volunteer organizations. The term "volunteer organizations" in this procedure refers to all volunteer organizations that operate to support school programs in the Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS), including but not limited to Booster Clubs, PTAs, and Foundations, which are subject to other applicable GCPS and State of Georgia rules and regulations.
Parent Teacher Association (PTA) / Parent Teacher Organization (PTO)
PTO is the umbrella name for school parent groups that are independent/stand-alone organizations that do not feed up into a larger organization.
PTAs are a collection of school parent groups, organized by councils and districts, that have a set of guidelines to follow set forth by the National PTA.
No matter the structure of your group, the focus of these collective organizations is coming together to support students, teachers, leaders, and initiatives in the school.
It is the decision of the school principal as to whether a school is supported by a PTA or PTO. Each school has a number of committees for parents to help guide and support the school’s educational process such as the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA), and PTO (Parent Teacher Organization). These organizations also support students by helping with activities such as curriculum nights, book fairs, and fundraising events.
