Brookwood and North Gwinnett teams triumph in Esports championships

Congratulations are in order! The Esports teams at Brookwood High School and North Gwinnett High School earned Georgia High School Association State Championship titles in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate (Brookwood) and League of Legends (North Gwinnett) for the 2024-25 Fall season.

North Gwinnett HS Esports State Champions

This was North Gwinnett High’s first-ever Esports championship, achieving this milestone just four years after launching the program. The “Teddy Bears” won 2-1 over Northview High School. This victory was very special to the Teddy Bears, as the team faced disappointment after falling short in the state championship in the spring of 2024.

“Our team is very proud of our accomplishments last season. This team finished third in the state tournament in spring 2024, and we wanted to make another run at the title,” says North Gwinnett High Esports coach and Algebra teacher Zach Bosworth. “We were able to keep all five players, and the team continued to practice whenever the opportunity allowed. This is a sport that allows students to simulate the competitive experiences from home, and they did. They earned this honor.”

Brookwood HS Esports State Champions

Brookwood High’s Esports program is no stranger to winning state titles. This is the team’s fifth state championship in Super Smash Bros. ( 5A-6A ). This year’s team, The Brookwood High Chillagers, won 3-1 against Discovery High School.

“To win five state titles takes a lot of consistency, but it's mostly due to the culture of the program. These kids love playing with one another, and that includes pushing one another to be better.  Brookwood has a tradition of excellence, and the students in our program take that very seriously and work hard to make their teammates proud,” says Brookwood High Esports coach and Math teacher Mick Winzeler.
