Fan-tastic Lessons: Parsons Elementary students learn Korean Traditional Fan Dance choreography and more

“1-2-3 switch!” Fans dotted with green and adorned by bright pink feathers bounce in the air on Thursday mornings at Parsons Elementary School. Before the start of the school day, a 15-member team practices the Korean Traditional Fan Dance, taught by Korean Specials Teacher Liz Oh.

Parsons ES Korean Dance Team

Oh started the dance team to share the beauty of Korean culture with the school community. “I’ve always believed that the best way to appreciate another culture is to actually experience it for yourself,” Oh says.

She explains that the school’s International Night always features impressive performances from different cultures, and she wanted the Korean dance team to be diverse as well. The team is comprised of 15 4th and 5th graders, and Oh says that even if the students aren’t Korean, they can learn the traditional fan dance and be part of something meaningful.

Members of the dance team say they joined because they wanted to show people how beautiful the dance is. They also enjoy learning the movements and seeing how pretty it looks when everyone is in sync.

Oh hopes students walk away from this experience with confidence and an appreciation for teamwork and different cultures. She adds that it’s not just about learning steps; it’s about learning respect, pride, and curiosity about the world around them. The fan dance team reflects Gwinnett County Public Schools’ commitment to each and every student by creating an inclusive space where all learners—regardless of background—can explore, connect, and celebrate diversity together.  When the team performs, students, families, and Parsons Elementary staff members will experience how dance unites and inspires wonder, joy, and appreciation for one another.

“Dance and music connect people, and I think this experience shows that beautifully,” Oh says. “I hope this is the first of many chances for our students to explore and experience cultures beyond their own, which will help build social awareness and meaningful relationships throughout their lives.”
