A Gwinnett County School Police Officer has been named the recipient of the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office Law Enforcement Appreciation Award for her exceptional service and commitment to school safety.

Officer Bethany Lewis was nominated for her role in investigating an incident at Duluth Middle School involving the discovery of a firearm on campus. Her efforts led to the safe apprehension of the individual involved. Her quick thinking and persistence ensured the safety of the school and the surrounding community.

“Officer Lewis’ thoroughness and commitment to understanding the situation fully before filing a report were crucial in identifying and removing a genuine safety threat from the school,” says Lt. David Sokol, GCPS School Police. “Her careful follow-through and cooperation with the DA's Office, which led to a search warrant and further investigation at the student’s home, revealed additional concerning items. Officer Lewis deserves commendation for her vigilance, professionalism, and dedication to ensuring student safety.”

Officer Lewis was honored during a celebratory event at the Gwinnett County Justice and Administration Center. This award highlights the ongoing efforts of GCPS officers to maintain secure learning environments and underscores the district’s commitment to student safety. “Every day, I strive to ensure that our students and staff feel safe and protected, and I’m deeply honored to be recognized for this work,” says Officer Lewis. “It’s a privilege to serve GCPS and contribute to making our schools safer for everyone.”
