New Policy for Student Cell Phones & Devices Under Review

New Policy for Student Cell Phones & Devices Under Review

At the November 20, 2025 Board of Education monthly meeting a new policy, Policy JCDAF - Use of Electronic Devices by Students, is being placed on the table for review until the December 18, 2025, Monthly Meeting. This policy aims to help students stay focused and safe at school and is aligned with Georgia’s new Distraction-Free Education Act (HB 340) that was signed into law.

What students and families need to know:

  • Why: Required by new Georgia state law; supports fewer distractions, better learning, and safer, more focused schools.

  • When: Policy goes into effect July 1, 2026

  • Elementary & Middle School (K–8): No personal electronic devices during the school day.

  • High School (9–12): No personal electronic device use during class time.

  • Exceptions: Students with medical or learning plans that require a device.

You can read the full policy and timeline on the GCPS website. We invite you to share your thoughts about the new policy aligned to the state law by reaching out to the Board of Education.

GCPS will continue sharing updates as we prepare for the 2026–27 school year. Let’s work together to support high-quality learning for all students.
