Former Paul Duke STEM High School student wins national competition

Kim Cao, a 2025 Paul Duke STEM High School graduate, won 1st place in the American Statistical Association's (ASA) 2025 Data Visualization Poster and Statistics Project National Competition.

Kim’s submission, “Mung Bean Boost: A Pressure Experiment,” was recognized as an interesting and unique topic that used effective and relevant tables and graphs, as well as a thoughtful discussion of limitations and generalizability.

Dr. Jonathon Wetherington, principal of Paul Duke STEM High, says their school community is thrilled to celebrate this incredible achievement.

“Kim’s accomplishment is a shining example of the excellence and creativity we strive to nurture in all our students. This project stood out nationally for its unique approach to data analysis, thoughtful design, and clear communication—hallmarks of a truly outstanding scholar,” Dr. Wetherington shares. “As educators, it is deeply rewarding to see our students succeed and make meaningful contributions to their fields. Kim’s success reflects not only hard work and talent, but it also points to the supportive learning environment and dedicated faculty who helped guide Kim’s journey.”

The poster and project competitions are directed by the ASA and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Joint Committee on Curriculum in Statistics and Probability. Each year, the statistical project competition attracts a wide variety of submissions in which students from grades 7-12 conduct creative studies. The statistical project competition is beneficial for these students because it provides them with opportunities to apply all the statistical skills they have acquired throughout the school year to solve real-world problems of interest to them.

First-place winners receive $300, a certificate, and grade-appropriate graphing calculators provided by Texas Instruments. Learn more about the ASA 2025 Data Visualization Poster and Statistics Project Competition Winners at AMSTAT News.
