GCPS athletic teams honored for sportsmanship

Three Gwinnett County schools have been recognized for their excellence in athletics and commitment to sportsmanship. Brookwood High School, Lanier High School, and Mill Creek High School have been named recipients of the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award. This honor highlights their dedication to respect, fairness, honesty, and responsibility in competitive events.

“We are incredibly proud of Brookwood, Lanier, and Mill Creek High Schools for receiving the GHSA Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award,” Gwinnett County Public Schools Athletic Director Jason Holcombe shares. “This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our student-athletes, coaches, and school communities in upholding the highest standards of sportsmanship, respect, and cooperative spirit. It truly reflects the values we strive to instill in all our athletic programs, and we are grateful to Georgia’s EMCs for acknowledging these outstanding achievements.”

Sponsored by Georgia’s Electric Membership Cooperatives (EMCs), the GHSA Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award is presented annually to GHSA-member high schools, with a winner in each of the 64 regions from the eight classifications, by EMC representatives during fall athletic events and school assemblies.

Since 2006, the GHSA and Georgia’s EMCs have sponsored the Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award, which reinforces the GHSA philosophy: “Students, athletes, coaches, spectators, and all others associated with high school activities programs should adhere to the fundamental values of respect, fairness, honesty, and responsibility.” Schools winning this award are thus honored for displaying exemplary sportsmanship during competition throughout the school year.
