GCPS schools named “Math Leaders” by Georgia Department of Education

Nearly 30 Gwinnett County public schools have been named 2024-25 Math Leader Schools by the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE). The honor recognizes schools for achievement or growth in the percentage of students scoring at the Proficient Learner level or above in mathematics. The Math Leader award underscores the importance of numeracy in 5th and 8th grades, and requires greater improvement from schools with lower starting achievement. The following schools were recognized for demonstrating exceptional achievement or growth in math:

  • Bay Creek MS
  • Britt ES
  • Burnette ES
  • Coleman MS
  • Couch MS
  • Creekland MS

These schools in GCPS are among a select group of 479 that met the qualifications to be recognized as “Math Leaders.”

“Mathematics builds the foundation for problem-solving and future success in every field,” said Dr. Al Taylor, Interim Superintendent of Gwinnett County Public Schools. “I commend our schools for their focused efforts to grow student achievement in math. These results show the impact of great teaching and hard work. We’ll continue building on this momentum to make sure every student gains the skills to think critically and thrive.”

Awards were given based on the outlined criteria at the elementary and middle school levels, and at the high school level based on the Algebra: Concepts and Connections EOC, which is the state test for mathematics in high school. Math Leader qualifications are based on students achieving the Proficient Learner level or above on the Georgia Milestones mathematics assessments.

The GaDOE began honoring schools as Math Leaders in 2024. For more information about the criteria, visit the GaDOE website.
