GCPS student wins statewide creative competition

Luis Castaneda Navarro, a Winn Holt Elementary School student, is being honored for his artistic talent. The 5th grader has been named the Junior American Citizens Art and Creative Expression contest winner in Georgia. Sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.), the contest is a state and national competition for Pre-K through 12th grade students.

Entries are judged by grade across four levels: gifted artist/writer, general, special needs/special effect, and non-declared/unspecified, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to participate regardless of ability. In addition to his state-level win, Luis has also been named the winner of D.A.R.’s Northeast Georgia Region.

“We are absolutely thrilled to celebrate this remarkable achievement,” says Principal Lisa Glausier. “Winning the Junior American Citizens Art and Creative Expression contest is not only a reflection of Luis’ incredible talent, but also of the supportive and inspiring environment we strive to cultivate every day at Winn Holt Elementary School. This honor shines a light on the power of creativity and the importance of encouraging young voices. We couldn’t be prouder!”

The 2024-2025 competition theme, “Sailing with the Stars and Stripes,” invited students to submit work celebrating the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.

“The D.A.R offers several contests and opportunities for children in grades Pre-K -12,” says D.A.R. Philadelphia Winn Chapter Regent Randi Minor. “We rely on the teachers, counselors, and school administrative professionals to present these children for these opportunities. Some of these include JROTC contests, essay contests, and even Outstanding Teacher of American History. I’m proud to say our chapter’s Outstanding Teacher nominees (all Gwinnett County teachers) have won the State award the last two years, and we’re hoping for a three-peat this year!”
