GCPS students achieve forklift operation certification

     Construction students at Berkmar High School recently participated in an industry-recognized Forklift Certification training opportunity hosted at Gwinnett Technical College in partnership with Georgia Power. Students engaged in hands-on skills training designed to introduce industry safety standards, equipment operation, and workforce expectations.

     “I want to thank Georgia Power for this amazing opportunity. This forklift certification allows me to have another tool that will create opportunities in the future as I learn more every day about myself and my potential as a quality member of today’s workforce,” says Berkmar High senior Ammy Castro-Vigil.

     Students who successfully completed the training and passed the assessment earned a forklift certification that strengthens their employability and industry readiness.

     “Forklift certification has allowed me to see just how much potential I have and gives me more understanding of the construction world as I begin my college education to earn my degree in Construction Management,” adds senior Christopher Torres.

     Dr. Tamia Robb, Academies and Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE) Coordinator, says the experience was extremely impactful because it provided students with direct exposure to real-world industry practices while allowing them to earn valuable credentials before graduation. Gwinnett County Public Schools’ (GCPS) CTAE program provides multiple pathway offerings and opportunities that help each and every student develop advanced, future-ready skills and explore career interests.

     “Opportunities like this help students build confidence, strengthen technical skills, and better understand career pathways available to them after high school,” Dr. Robb explains.

     This event prepares students for the future by equipping them with industry-recognized certification, hands-on experience, and workplace readiness skills that are highly valued by employers, Dr. Robb adds. In addition to technical training, students also developed professionalism, communication, and safety awareness skills that will benefit them in both post-secondary education and the workforce.

     “This opportunity will immediately allow me to be a contributing member of Titan Electric as part of my job is warehouse and fabrication,” says senior Yariel Conde. “Looking down the road, this certification and skill knowledge will open more opportunities and increase my base of industrial knowledge.”
