GCPS students receive “Student Emmy” nominations and two wins

Paul Duke STEM High School students were nominated in the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) Student Production Awards for five videos. Students won first place for Best News Magazine Program and Best Public Affairs/Community Service Video, “GCPS implements Evol weapons detection system,” during the awards ceremony in November.

“This year, we submitted five videos and each of them was nominated, which was very rewarding,” says Broadcast Video Journalism teacher Brooke Skelton. “My students work extremely hard, inside and outside the classroom, so it’s great to be recognized. More importantly, it gives the students exposure and the opportunity for others to see their work.”

The NATAS student production awards (student Emmys) are very similar to the daytime Emmys. They recognize excellence in various sectors of the television and broadcast industry including news, sports, and other craft categories. This year, Paul Duke STEM High students were nominated in the categories of Best News Magazine Program, Arts/Cultural Affairs Video, Promotional Video, Public Affairs/Community Service Video, and On-Air Talent.

“Most of the videos come from our school TV show, PDS-TV, which is produced by my senior internship class,” Skelton adds. “I’ve been teaching these students for 3+ years and know them really well. They all work together in groups to plan, film, and edit each segment.”

Nominations include the following:

Christmas on Amberwood Drive - Andria Sakheishvili, Jonathan Hernandez-Reyes, Spencer Schenke

PDS-TV Celebrates Black History Month - Quincy Robinson, Isaac Liverance, Joshua Noel, Tess Richardson

GCPS implements Evol weapons detection system - Autumn Carey, Caleb Pickup

PDS Senior Recap - Jack Goldberg, Isaac Liverance, Joshua Noel, Tess Richardson

Yennelle Gordon News Reel - Yennelle Gordon

In addition to winning Best Public Affairs/Community Service Video, the Evol weapons detection video was a segment produced for the Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) student voice collective. Students produced the segment last fall, and GPB published the video online in January.

The National Student Production Awards recognize outstanding achievement in video production. NATAS promotes excellence by showcasing work created by high school students in news, craft, and programming categories.
