GCPS Director honored with the GLES Education Leadership Award

Lynnette Aponte, Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) Director of the International Newcomer Center (INC), has been named the recipient of the inaugural Georgia Latino Education Summit (GLES) K-12 Education Leadership Award. The award recognizes an individual who has displayed leadership, advocacy, and impact in the Latino community in the state of Georgia for an extended period. Aponte was honored for her passionate work supporting migrant families as they transition into the district.

“This recognition means so much to me because it reflects my commitment to serving students, families, and our community, as well as the collective efforts of so many educators, mentors, and colleagues who have supported and inspired me throughout my career,” Aponte shares. “In my current role as Director of the International Newcomer Center, I work to create welcoming systems and meaningful supports that empower newcomer families to thrive and realize their full potential. My goal is to support the creation of spaces where every language and culture is celebrated, and every family feels they truly belong.”

The GLES Summit is held tri-annually at the University of Georgia and brings together educators, researchers, community leaders, policymakers, parents, and students for thoughtful discussions on Latinx student achievement. Through breakout sessions, keynote speakers, and engagement, GLES aims to provoke data-driven conversations on Latino education at every academic level.

“[I believe] that language should serve as a bridge, not a barrier, for students and families,” Aponte continues. “As a Latina and a former English learner, I carry both the lived experience and the responsibility to open doors for those on similar journeys. Our newcomer students’ and families’ resilience inspires me and strengthens my commitment to ensure every student and family has equitable access to the opportunities they deserve.”

The INC serves as the first point of contact for international families with middle and high school students, providing support to families in need of language services, student services, and family outreach.
