Gwinnett County Public Schools Announces Pause in Redistricting Plans

Gwinnett County Public Schools Announces Pause in Redistricting Plans
(GCPS) is pausing its planned redistricting efforts.

The decision follows recent shifts in student enrollment across the district and provides an opportunity for GCPS to focus on making the best use of available space in existing schools before considering any attendance boundary changes.

GCPS remains committed to providing safe, welcoming, and high-quality learning environments where every scholar can learn, grow, and succeed. As part of that commitment, the district continuously monitors enrollment, school capacity, facility needs, and long-term growth trends to ensure scholars have access to effective learning spaces.

Earlier this year, the district shared a multi-year plan that identified areas that could potentially be considered for future attendance boundary adjustments. The plan was intended to give families and community members advance notice of possible changes and outlined a process that would include community engagement, staff recommendations, and Board of Education review.

After further review of current enrollment trends, district leaders have determined that now is the right time to focus on maximizing existing school capacity and evaluating other options to address overcrowding before moving forward with attendance boundary changes.

As a result, GCPS will not move forward this fall with the process that would have evaluated attendance boundary adjustments for the 2027-28 school year.

“We understand that school attendance boundaries are important to families and communities,” said GCPS Superintendent Dr. Alexandra Estrella. “This pause allows us to take a closer look at how we can best use our existing facilities while continuing to meet the needs of our scholars. We remain committed to keeping families informed and involved as we plan for the future.”

GCPS will continue to study enrollment patterns, monitor facility capacity, and evaluate long-term solutions to support growing and changing communities across the district.

As the district considers future redistricting needs, GCPS is committed to listening to families, staff, and community members. During the second semester of the 2026-27 school year, the district will host community conversations and provide opportunities for stakeholders to share feedback. Input from these discussions will help inform future redistricting conversations, and the district will share updates on next steps, timelines, and any potential impacts to schools and families.

GCPS appreciates the patience, partnership, and support of its families, staff, and community members as the district continues its work to provide high-quality learning environments for all scholars.

Families and community members are encouraged to monitor official GCPS communication channels for future updates.
