Driver's Education
The Driver's Education program offered through GCPS High Schools thoroughly covers a Georgia Department of Driver Services approved curriculum, where safety, skill, and confidence converge to shape responsible drivers for life.
Depending on the Cluster, we follow a curriculum comprising 30 hours of classroom instruction or 30 hours of virtual/modular instruction and six hours of behind-the-wheel driving. Our programs satisfy the Drivers Education requirement known as “Joshua’s Law”.
In the classroom, students learn the fundamentals of road safety, traffic laws, defensive driving techniques, and the psychological aspects of responsible driving. Led by experienced instructors, interactive lessons, multimedia presentations, and group discussions ensure that students grasp essential concepts while fostering a deep understanding of the responsibilities that come with being behind the wheel.
Outside the classroom, students transition from theory to practice during the six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. Under the guidance of certified driving instructors, students navigate real-world driving scenarios, honing their skills in vehicle control, hazard recognition, and decision-making.
From residential streets to highways, students gain invaluable experience in diverse driving environments, preparing them to confidently handle any situation they may encounter on the road. A valid learner’s permit is required for the behind-the-wheel training.
Course Options:
- $450 for the 30-hour class and six hours of Behind-the-Wheel driving.
- $385 for six hours of Behind-the-Wheel driving only and is offered through most Community Schools.
- Students can apply for the Georgia Driver’s Education Commission (GDEC) Grant Scholarship that covers the full cost of 30 hours of classroom training and six (6) hours of behind the wheel training.
Contact the local Community School Coordinator for schedules. Successful completion of the course will allow for possible insurance benefits for parents.
