Convene Redistricting Advisory Committee(s)

Planning staff convenes the redistricting advisory committee to review the GCPS procedure, discuss the role and responsibilities of the committee, clarify expectations including timelines and deliverables, address questions, and to provide an overview of the initial draft plan.

Gather Input on the Draft Plan through the Advisory Commitee(s)

Redistricting committee representatives share the draft plan with their school communities and gather input. Generally, committee members present at key community and parent meetings such as the PTA. Information is also shared through existing methods of school communication. Data are collected from each impacted school by committee members. Advisory committee members review and summarize input, and if desired, may propose changes to draft boundaries.

Planning staff also works with our Engagement Office to publicize the draft plan and create public input opportunities via the website. Initial input from committee members and the public is received by the end of October.

Gather Input through First Staff-Led Public Hearing

After receiving initial input, Planning staff may revise the draft plan. Any plan revisions are shared with the public during a November Public Hearing and on the website. Key staff members, as well as Board of Education members, may attend each hearing. To be convenient to Board Members, if a redistricting is relatively small, the public hearing may be held on the same day as the November Board of Education Meeting. A separate day is generally selected when redistricting is more significant, impacting many schools. During the public hearing, staff will review the process and draft plan. The public may sign up at the event to speak and provide input. Input is also received by Planning staff in written form and via the website.

Gather Input through Second Staff-Led Public Hearing

Staff uses community input to make any necessary revisions to the draft plan and prepares a recommendation for the Board of Education. The recommendation is shared with the public on our website prior to a December Public Hearing. The December Public Hearing format is like the first public hearing. Historically, the second public hearing occurs on the same day as the December 18 Board of Education Meeting. Input gathered prior to and during this public hearing may be considered by staff prior to presenting a final recommendation to the Board during their evening business meeting. Redistricting plans must be approved by the Board in December so enrollment forecasts may be completed prior to the winter break. This ensures our HR, budgeting, redistricting notification, Synergy rollover, and school scheduling processes proceed in accordance with our timelines.

Notify Parents Regarding Final Redistricting

Families impacted by redistricting are notified via mail and ParentSquare. Parents of existing high school students in good standing can stay at their current zoned school if the family provides transportation.
