What science classes do students take in middle school?
Students take Earth Science, Life Science, and Physical Science during middle school.
What are the options for 8th grade science?
In 8th grade, students can take one of two courses:
8th Grade Physical Science – a standard middle school course with a Milestones End-of-Grade test
High School Physical Science – a standard high school-level course that counts for high school credit and includes a Milestones End-of-Grade test designed exclusively for 8th graders taking the high school-level course
Which course do most students take?
Most GCPS 8th graders take the High School Physical Science course.
Why would a student take the standard 8th Grade Physical Science course instead?
This option can be considered for students who may benefit from a less rigorous course if their individual learning needs outweigh the benefits that come with taking the high school-level course.
Why GCPS Offers High School Physical Science in 8th Grade
Why does GCPS encourage 8th graders to take the high school-level course?
The high school physical science course is a foundational course that prepares students well for the rigors of high school science. Since 2012, GCPS has offered this opportunity to help students:
Earn high school credit before 9th grade. A vast majority of students enrolled earn the high school Carnegie credit.
Get ready for high school science classes like Biology, Chemistry, and Physics
Have equitable access to opportunities like STEM programs, AP science courses, and career pathways
High School Science Requirements
What science classes are required to graduate from high school in Georgia?
Students need 4 science credits to graduate in Georgia. In GCPS students take:
Biology
Chemistry
Physics
One elective (this can be an AP science class, a dual enrollment science class, or another approved science course)
Milestones Testing and Performance
How does GCPS compare to other districts in 8th grade science?
Over 97%of GCPS 8th graders take the high school-level science course, while most other districts only offer it to about 30% of students—usually those in gifted or STEM programs.
How are GCPS students performing on the high school-level science test?
In 2025, 44%of students scored at the Proficient or Distinguished level—an improvement from 38% in 2024, showing strong progress even with the course’s higher expectations.
Why doesn’t GCPS use the regular 8th Grade Science test for comparisons?
Only 2% of GCPS students take the standard 8th Grade Science test, compared to nearly 70% in other districts. Because of this, comparing scores from that test doesn’t give an accurate picture of GCPS student achievement.
