GCPS Redistricting Plan

Gwinnett County Public Schools is committed to creating safe and welcoming learning environments where students can pursue their passions and education. Each day, GCPS staff improve and maintain learning environments through support from custodial teams, ongoing care of our outdoor facilities, preventive maintenance and repairs to school building systems, and ongoing capital investments in facility renewal and construction.
In support of our commitment to safe and welcoming schools, GCPS staff are developing options to address school overcrowding and reduce our reliance on temporary classroom trailers for daily instruction. In some GCPS communities, overcrowding may be addressed by reassigning students to nearby schools with available classroom capacity. In other communities, both the use of existing capacity and the construction of new classrooms are needed to address overcrowding. In both situations, staff may recommend adjusting school attendance boundaries to better align enrollment with available capacity. The process of adjusting attendance boundaries is called school redistricting.
To be as transparent as possible, staff recently presented a multi-year, phased approach to school redistricting to the Gwinnett Board of Education on March 18. The plan includes timeframes and regions that may be impacted by redistricting over the next three to four years. This multi-year plan will be reviewed and potentially revised each year during our capital plan updates to our Board of Education and the public.
Each of the three phases includes GCPS Clusters that may be impacted by redistricting. Each phase is intended to provide our community with high-level awareness of the potential for school redistricting. Exact clusters, schools, and neighborhoods impacted by redistricting options within each phase will be shared with our Board of Education and community in the Fall of each year, as the redistricting process begins. Upon completion of a community engagement process, staff present final recommended redistricting plans to the Board of Education for review and approval. Plans are approved by the Board of Education in December to take effect the next school year.
Please note: In each phase, exact communities and clusters impacted will be communicated in the fall, prior to the beginning of our redistricting community engagement process. Schools affected by any proposed redistricting plan or alternative will be notified when information becomes available. Identified regions are subject to change based on actual enrollment, the need for temporary classrooms/trailers, changes in school over-/undercrowding, and updated enrollment projections.

GCPS values ongoing community input from families and the community throughout this multi-year, phased redistricting process. While overall enrollment has declined in recent years, student enrollment varies across our schools and clusters. Redistricting helps to balance enrollment so that all students have access to strong programs, appropriate class sizes, and the resources they need to succeed.
As Gwinnett County continues to grow and change, GCPS is committed to working in partnership with families and the community to make thoughtful, student-centered decisions.
