Kindergarten Entry Consideration Requests

Starting Kindergarten is an exciting milestone, and we understand that some families have questions about their child’s Kindergarten entry or grade placement. Gwinnett County Public Schools is committed to making grade level decisions that are student-centered, equitable, and based on multiple sources of information.

This page explains how families can request a review of kindergarten entry consideration and what to expect during the process.

Who May Request a Kindergarten Entry Consideration Review?

Families may request a Kindergarten grade level review for a child who:

  • Will turn six years old before September 1, and
  • Is not currently receiving special education services through an Individualized Education Program (IEP).

If a student has an IEP, placement decisions are handled through a separate process to ensure appropriate supports and services.

How the Process Works

Important Things Families Should Know

  1. Timeline for this process:
    • Requests may begin after Online Registration opens for the next school year.
    • Schools will schedule a meeting and complete readiness activities.
    • Families will meet with the school team to review results and receive a grade placement decision.
  2. Decisions are made in the best interest of the student, using research-based practices and multiple sources of information.
  3. This process focuses on school readiness, academic development, and social-emotional growth.
  4. If concerns about a possible disability arise at any point, schools will follow required procedures to ensure students receive appropriate evaluation and support.

Kindergarten Registration for the 2026-27 school year opens on March 16, 2026.
