Eligibility Requirements for Enrollment in Gwinnett County Public Schools
Georgia state law (O.C.G.A. 20-2-150) sets specific guidelines for school enrollment:
- “…all children and youth who have attained the age of 5 years by September 1st shall be eligible for enrollment in the appropriate general education programs authorized in this part…”
- Gwinnett County Public Schools provides the general determination that all children and youth that have attained the age of 5 years by September 1st are appropriately placed in kindergarten. (Policy & Procedure JBA)
- Gwinnett County Public Schools provides the general determination that all children and youth that have attained the age of 6 years by September 1st are appropriately placed in 1st grade. (Policy & Procedure JBA)
- Parents may request a determination of appropriate placement through the Student Support Team (SST) process by contacting the school principal.
Moving from Another State or Country
If your family recently moved to Georgia, your child may still qualify for enrollment if:
- You lived in another state or country for the two years just before moving, and
- Your child was legally enrolled in an accredited public or state-recognized kindergarten or first grade there.
- In these cases, children who turn 5 (for kindergarten) or 6 (for first grade) by December 31 may enroll in Georgia.
No Other Exceptions
State law does not allow exceptions for:
- Private school students in Georgia
- Early entry based on testing or readiness
- Students who were not previously enrolled in an eligible program
Local school boards and superintendents cannot waive these age requirements as an exception to the state law.
