School Highlights

The Buice Center supports all the middle school and high school throughout the district.  Our programs are ADAPT, BRIDGE, STRIVE, and Project SEARCH.  We are a Special Entity center and serve students with disabilities.

ADAPT/STRIVE/Project SEARCH serves students 18-22. The essential components of these programs are education, employment, and independence. Any student that attends these programs have completed the required coursework toward graduation at their homeschool. An IEP team must meet and agreed one of these program is a proper change of placement for the students goals, objectives, and transition plan per their IEP. 

The BRIDGE program is also an IEP team decision.  In this program we serve both middle school and high school students still working on graduation required courses. The Buice Center BRIDGE staff and the homeschool remain in partnership and the primary goals is for the student to return to the homeschool .  The BRIDGE program provides therapeutic supports to our students, in addition to continuing their academic requirements.

  • The Buice Center celebrated many students this year.  In our Bridge program we had one student graduate and receive a high school diploma, and one student earned a high school certificate. Also, we are so proud of the hard work of our Bridge students this year 2 two middle school students, 8 high school students, and 2 low incidence students were able to return to their homeschools. In our Adapt and Strive programs we were too able to celebrate 42 students and give them their diplomas at the end of the year as they completed their requirements and aged out.  We also had 3 students who completed the Project SEARCH program at Scanfil and receive their high school diplomas and secure fulltime employment.  We are so very proud of all of them.

  • The Buice Center has a partnership with Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency.  Therefore, with our partnership 82 students in the fall and 89 students in Spring received pre-employment transition services, exploring career options, develop skills and prepare for post=secondary education and employment. During the year we were able to assist with 11 referrals and hold full client meetings.

  • We are so happy that our Post Secondary Activity survey results continue to be positive once students complete the Adapt, Strive, and Project SEARCH programs. Our results show that 24.2% of our students are in a competitively employed, 29% have part-time, self and supported employment, 16.1% are employed in sheltered work or day habilitation, and 12.9 enrolled in other postsecondary education or training.

  • Our students participated in several fun activities throughout the year by programs.  The Adapt program had clubs weekly, career exploration classes, Fire Safety presentation by Gwinnett fire fighters, participated in Special Olympic throughout the year with district schools, held a talent show, and went to the Stripers Game.  Our Strive and Project SEARCH students learned about Ride Gwinnett and practiced their skills, toured a bank, tour the Gwinnett Justice Center, and were able to practice adult living skills by going out to eat, movies, and participating in leisure activities.  The Bridge students grade 8 -12 were able to visit their homeschools for a day. All Bridge students participated in weekly and monthly PBIS activities, participated in clubs 2 times a month, an interactive author visit, and Gwinnett Library tech event each semester.  All students were able to receive a book from the GCPS book mobile each semester, enjoy a visit from the UGA Manufacturing Living Labs, celebrate in student of the month recognitions, and so much.  It was a great year at the Buice Center for all.

  • The Buice Center held a Community Night in the spring.  Sugar Hill Church provided dinner for all that attended.  The families enjoyed the opportunity to attend 3 sessions of their choice during the evening.  There were representatives from Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency, Ride Gwinnett Transit, Gwinnett Parks and Recreation, Gwinnett Probate Court Judge to discuss guardianship, Gwinnett Public Library, Project SEARCH, and Voter Registration. All enjoyed the fellowship with families and gained great knowledge to help support the students transition to adult hood. Thank you to Sugar Hill Church and all the presenters for a great night.

  • We would like to highlight the many business partners that support our program throughout the year.  A great big thank you to Scanfil our host sight for Project SEARCH.  Hosting our Adapt program is Kroger, Burlington, Sheridan Eastside, Beaver Ridge Elementary, Dyer Elementary, Camp Creek Elementary Rock Springs Elementary and Couch Middle School. Our Strive program community partners are Kroger's (6 locations), Atlanta Dental, Ingles, Burlington, PBD, BB Harris Elementary, Atlanta Marriott, and Chattahoochee Elementary.  These community partners provide us safe surroundings for training our students, often provide mentors, give us grace to learn from mistakes and provide our students unconditional love to while learning.
