School Highlights

The following school highlights showcase how Oakland Meadow School is fulfilling Gwinnett County Public School's four strategic priorities of Empathy, Equity, Effectiveness, and Excellence. Visit the School Profile Dashboard to find more detailed data on our school.

  • At Oakland Meadow School, students and staff share and spread Oakland Love each and every day. This year, we celebrated students and staff with events such as our monthly Oakland Days of Love and our Share the Love Event on Valentine’s Day. Our Share the Love event included a family dance where students, their families, and our staff came together to connect and engage with one another. Students and staff participated in daily affirmations during the Knightly News this school year, and our students were provided with Oakland Love t-shirts to show their school spirit. Students were also provided with bag tags to remind them of how much they were loved.
  • Oakland Meadow School had several events and activities during the fall and winter months, including Donuts with Grown-ups, Storybook Scarecrows, and our annual Storybook Parade. Our Veteran’s Day Program included a parade to celebrate our Veterans and a school-wide assembly where our students engaged in a read-aloud by our principal and had the opportunity to listen to the stories of our visiting Veterans and ask questions specific to their service. Another wonderful Fall community-building event was our first annual Friendsgiving Celebration. Students and staff came together to enjoy a meal and fellowship with one another during this time. In December, Oakland Meadow School held a Holiday Bingo Night and opened the doors to its Holiday Shop for families and community members. Our annual Holiday Shop allows our students to be entrepreneurs and demonstrate their leadership skills.
  • Oakland Meadow School continued its implementation of Positive Behavior Support & Interventions (PBIS) school-wide. Students earned Black Knight Bucks for being respectful, responsible role models throughout the school day. Students were able to use their Black Knight Bucks to purchase items of interest and participate in monthly PBIS celebrations. Our Student of the Month nominees continue to be recognized each month in their classroom by our principal. Nominated students are recognized on the Knightly News; their picture is displayed on the Student of the Month board, and our Principal visits their classroom to present them with a certificate, their nomination form, and a special incentive.
  • This school year, our classroom teachers participated in a daily read-aloud with their students and were provided a “Book a Day” by our Media Specialist, Ms. Angie Devitt. Ms. Devitt published a monthly Media Center newsletter that included a variety of literacy-based instructional activities. Our principal hosted monthly thematic read-alouds in the media center and engaged our students, their families, and our staff in an online story time each month. Storytime was not only a time for students to listen to several featured picture books, but it was also an opportunity for our families to learn more about upcoming events and activities at Oakland Meadow School.
  • Each student at Oakland Meadow School was appointed an adult mentor through our PAL Program this school year. Students and their mentors connected weekly and participated in PAL Parties throughout the year. Students also continued to participate in a staff-led club of their choice. Students attended clubs on a monthly basis during the school day.
  • Staff and students came together each month this school year to learn more about the cultural heritages of our school family. We culminated our learning with International Day on March 29, 2024. The day started with an International Parade and included cultural performances from our staff. Students, their families, and staff also enjoyed a variety of international foods and games at our “World’s Fair”.
  • Students at Oakland Meadow School participated in several in-school and off-campus field trips this year. In the fall, students went to the Yellow River Animal Sanctuary. Our students virtually visited the King Center in January to learn more about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The School of the Arts from Central Gwinnett High School performed a winter choral concert for our students and visited our school in the spring for a drama performance. Students also participated in a Sensory Art Experience hosted by local artist Vinnie Tafuri. During mid-year conferences this school year, our families experienced “Oakland Meadow’s Art Walk”. This event provided an opportunity to showcase student art and engage our families in a variety of sensory-based art activities.
  • Oakland Meadow School's Student Council focused on servant leadership, both in the larger community and our school-based community. Service projects included collecting non-food items, making birthday cake kits, and collecting pasta and tomato sauce to donate to local food cooperatives. Our Student Council members spread Oakland Love by participating in holiday caroling and engaging in random acts of kindness throughout the school year. Members of the Student Council also held a special session where they hosted our Principal for a Day, Ms. Allona Lane Cross, Executive Director of the Georgia Commission on Equal Opportunity. Our Student Council members truly are natural-born leaders. And developing our students' natural-born leadership skills. Our students are born leaders!
  • Oakland Meadow School's Alumni Association continues to support graduates of Oakland Meadow School. Our alumni attended events and activities throughout this school year. Members of the Alumni Association attend graduation to welcome new members and host the Senior Picnic. Our social worker, Ms. Christina Mahoney, leads our Alumni Association and helps our families connect, problem-solve, and support one another through the Transitioning Parent Network.
  • Oakland Meadow School celebrated the accomplishments of each and every student at our Annual Awards Ceremony and honored five graduates this school year with our first, very own Oakland Meadow School Diploma. We also held our first annual UKnighted Walk for rising 6th graders, 9th graders, and graduates. Students also participated in our first Field Day event hosted by our Adapted Physical Education Teachers.
