Kindergarten Parent Information
Parent AKS Brochure
Gwinnett's curriculum for grades K-12 is called the Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) and is aligned to the state adopted Georgia Performance Standards of Excellence in Language Arts, Mathematics, and literacy standards for Science and Social Studies. The Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) are in place for other content areas. Gwinnett's AKS is a rigorous curriculum that prepares students for college and 21st century careers in a globally competitive future.
The AKS for each grade level spells out the essential concepts students are expected to know and skills they should acquire in that grade or subject. The AKS offers a solid base on which teachers build rich learning experiences. Teachers use curriculum guides, technology, and instructional resources to teach the AKS and to make sure every student is learning to his or her potential.
The Parent AKS brochure provides an overview of each Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) curriculum area for your student, as well as information about special programs, promotion requirements, and grade level assessments.
Gwinnett County Student Parent Handbook
The Student Parent Handbook contains important information for students and parents including detailed information about the Gwinnett County schools and expectations for students. Please review this handbook carefully with your child.
Kindergarten Promotion Criteria
To earn promotion to the 1st grade, students must demonstrate proficiency of the current grade-level Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS). Readiness for the 1st grade will be determined by the child’s classroom grades, assessments, and/or input from the school’s Student Support Team (SST).
