Permissive Transfer Information
As of January 30, 2023, Paul Duke STEM is no longer accepting permissive transfer requests from rising 9th grade students for the 2023-2024 school year.
The Gwinnett County Board of Education has in place a process that allows students to transfer from their assigned school to another school within the district. This process includes permissive transfers, childcare/hardship transfers, medical/legal transfers, as well as the transfer of children of employees and current high school students rezoned to a new high school.
In 2009, the Georgia Assembly passed HB251, which is often referred to as the “choice” bill. The Georgia Board of Education approved an amendment to Gwinnett County Public Schools’ IE2 Partnership Contract waiving this requirement for Gwinnett County Public Schools, acknowledging that the district already maintains a streamlined permissive transfer process for parents to request student transfers between schools within the district. In the spirit of HB251, Gwinnett County Public Schools shares the following information with its community about its permissive transfer process:
- General information concerning GCPS’ permissive Transfer Process
- Gwinnett schools accepting a permissive transfer
- Timeline for requesting a permissive transfer
Paul Duke STEM High School is accepting permissive transfers for the 23-24 school year. Transfers by currently enrolled students should be requested as early as possible and should not be made later than 7 days after each semester begins. Approval for any student requesting a transfer outside of the seven days after the semester begins is subject to the discretion of the receiving school principal based on the best interest of the child.
As we are a STEM school with a 4-year STEM program beginning in the freshman year and culminating with the Senior Experience and Exhibition, the best time to request a permissive transfer is as students transition from 8th grade to 9th grade. If you live in Gwinnett County, can provide transportation, and have a current 8th grade student wanting to attend Paul Duke STEM next school year, please fill out this form.
Once the permissive transfer form is completed, please turn it in along with current academic, discipline and attendance records (a report card and Letter of Good Standing) to our school’s Registrar, Diane Bond by either faxing to 678-442-5342 or by dropping it off in the front office. Please review the application carefully and note the criteria for consideration. You will receive a confirmation email when your application has been received with follow-up information. If you would like to tour the school, please call the school. Group tours will be scheduled in the Fall.
