First Lego League Challenge Team

Grades 4-5             Sponsor: Michelle Ruhl

In the First Lego League (FLL) Challenge Club, the fourth and fifth grade students will apply the Engineering and Design Process to solve a real world problem using Lego Bricks, powered by Spike Prime. There are three main parts of the club: Innovation Project, Core Values, and Programming. The innovation project involves the team identifying and researching a problem connected to the current season’s theme. The team must also design, share and refine a solution to the problem they identify. The core values (discovery, innovation, impact, inclusion, teamwork and fun) guide the team through preparation and competition. The third part is programming the SPIKE Prime robot to accomplish different missions on the mission board. The club meets weekly August to October and bi weekly November through December. FLL Challenge will meet on Tuesday afternoons from 3:00– 4:10 p.m. August - January.  Ten students will be selected based upon their application and tryout results. The club fee is $50.

First Lego League Discover Team

Grades K-1         Sponsors: Claudia Rietig and Emma Eidson

In First Lego League (FLL) Discover students are introduced to the fundamentals of STEM while working together to solve fun challenges and building models and robots using LEGO STEAM Park. FLL Discover is limited to 16 students. A selection committee will review applications to determine the club members. This club will begin in January 2024 and run through the end of March 2024.  FLL Discover will meet on Tuesday afternoons from 3:10-4:10 p.m. The students will showcase their work at the county festival on a Saturday date TBD.  The club fee is $30.

First Lego League Explore Team

Grades 2-3             Sponsor: Rosalyn Ankerson

In First Lego League (FLL) Explore, second and third grade students will apply science, engineering, and math concepts, plus a big dose of imagination, to develop solutions to real-world challenges using SPIKE Prime. They also design, build, and program SPIKE Prime Legos based robots to perform missions. FLL Explore is limited to 6 students. A selection committee will review the applications to determine the club members. This club will begin September 25 and run through April 15. The students will participate in a Discover Festival on a Saturday in April. The date is to be determined by GCPS.  FLL Explore will meet on Monday afternoons from 3:00– 4:30 p.m. The club fee is $35.

Students will learn and play traditional board games. Students will also have the opportunity to introduce games they know to others. Instructors will focus on the Social Emotional components of learning to play fairly. This club meeting dates TBD during the second semester from 3:15-4:15 p.m. Groovy Games is limited to 20 students. The club fee is $20.

i9-Sports

i9 Sports offers youth sports for boys and girls. This club helps kids succeed in life through sports teaching the importance of good sportsmanship on the field and in life. i9- Sports will meet on Thursdays from 3- 4 p.m. Register your child online at https://www.i9sports.com/. Longhorns Going Green

Reader’s Rally

Passionate readers will engage in reading 10 books. Students will then be quizzed on each book and eventually compete in a county wide competition that will take place on a Saturday in February 2024. The club will begin meeting at the end of September and conclude in February 2024.  Reader’s Rally is limited to 10 students.

Running Club

Fee: $50

Students will focus on endurance of mind and body. Our social-emotional component will walk students through a series of lessons including relationship skills, self-awareness, showing sportsmanship, and the power of positive self-talk. Students will participate in a progressive running program resulting in students running a 5K. The club will meet on Tuesdays from 3:15-4:30 p.m. Tryouts will take place on October 24. The club will meet every Tuesday from November 7- March 26. The club fee is $50.

Traveling the Globe

Students will explore various cultures around the world, participating in research, art projects, and enjoying the food from that region. The club will meet twice a month on Wednesdays and start after Labor Day. The club fee is $20 and is limited to 15 students.

Agape Arts Drama Club Program

1st - 5th grade

Drama Club teaches our students the foundations of Theatre and Performing Arts. We will focus on developing characters, scene analysis, improvisation skills, and performance techniques on stage. Our Drama Club program encourages everyone to develop their creativity, build confidence, improve their critical thinking skills, become better public speakers, and so much more! Our qualified teachers take great pride in offering a friendly, attentive, and safe environment for all of our students. All students will have the opportunity to perform twice for family and friends for the Winter and Spring showcase throughout the 2023-2024 school year!

Sugar Hill Elementary Chorus

Grades: 5th

Sponsor: Joanna Kirk Dotson

Sugar Hill Elementary Chorus is a club for any 5th Graders who LOVE to sing and are willing to work hard as a team! 

Each week in chorus rehearsal, students will: 

• Work on developing a healthy vocal tone 

• Learn and refine new music to perform at our concert 

• Apply previously learned music literacy skills to the new context of chorus music 

• Build a sense of community as we work together as a team 

Singing in a chorus is just like a team sport - it requires every team member to try their best to help the group succeed. Students who sign up for the chorus should be willing to attend rehearsals, treat others with respect, and try their best throughout the rehearsals. 

If that sounds like you, and if you really enjoy singing, consider joining Sugar Hill Elementary Chorus! We will end our singing season with an evening concert in December. Exact details about the concert will be communicated to parents by the first rehearsal on September 11th.

Here are the guidelines for the Sign-up Screening Video: 

• Students should submit a video of themselves singing a song of their choice (a simple song, such as “Happy Birthday” or “Twinkle Twinkle” is perfectly acceptable). 

• There should be no background music (out loud in the recording or in a student’s earphones). This should be “a cappella” singing, which means ONLY the student’s voice.  

• The singing in the video should be between 15 seconds and 1 minute (approximately). 

• The videos will not be posted for any other students to view. 

• If students prefer, they may record audio only and not show themselves on video while they sing. 

Important Note: Ms. Dotson wants all 5th graders who love to sing and are committed to doing their best in Chorus to be able to participate! This video will give Ms. Dotson some information about your singing voice, but it is not a high-stakes audition. Try your best, but don’t stress! 

Ms. Dotson will send acceptance information via email by August 26th and create a group for the chorus in Parent Square. 

National Jr. Beta Club     

Grade 5                            Sponsor: Chris Wood

This is an invitation only academic and leadership club that requires specific qualifications to be eligible. Members can also volunteer/serve on our yearbook committee/club. Students had to have all As in their 4th grade subjects (Bs or higher in advanced content classes), good behavior, and leadership potential. Jr. Beta will meet on the first Thursday of the month from 7:00-7:45 a.m. The club fee is $22 and will cover local and national dues. There will be an optional t-shirt for an additional fee if students and their families choose to purchase.

The Coder School is proud to join the roster of After-School partners with Sugar Hill Elementary this semester! The kids join us after school each week in the computer lab as we teach them to code awesome games and apps in Scratch for kids in 2nd-5th grade! We also have a Dash Robotics program for kids in Kindergarten & 1st grade!

We’re also offering a special perk for the kids who attend our After-School program. Each weekend we’ll host a Roblox gaming event online for the kids to join and have fun with their classmates, the Roblox Game Night is included in the price too!
