Superintendent Dr. Watts to receive inaugural World Peace Revival Award on April 1, 2023

March 24, 2023

On Saturday, April 1, 2023, at Rodney Cook Sr. Peace Park, during the unveiling of Dr. King’s “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” statue, the World Peace Revival Movement will present the inaugural World Peace Revival Legacy Award to nine exemplary recipients who personify Dr. King’s ideals and have showcased them in their dedication and commitment to the community. Among them, Gwinnett County Public Schools’ (GCPS) Superintendent, Dr. Calvin J. Watts and Congressman Rich McCormick. The award, being presented by Ambassador Andrew Young, is being passed to the next generation of Dr. King’s Beloved Community to further his mission of peace and nonviolence.

World Peace Revival is a movement whose mission promotes peace and unity through interfaith prayer, acts of kindness, and storytelling. Georgia artists Kathy Fincher and Stan Mullins designed and sculpted the statue, showing Dr. King delivering his iconic “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech. “We believe that the message behind Dr. King’s ministry has universal value,” said Fincher. “It was his faith that led him to do good works, become a great man, and a Nobel Peace Prize Recipient.”

The Dr. King statue will be installed in the Rodney Cook Sr. Peace Park in Atlanta’s Historic Vine City, where it will join 17 other statues of Georgia’s peacemakers from the last 300 years. Get more details on the “Peace Walk” and statue unveiling here.

The hosts of the award are Clyde and Sandra Strickland, Metro Waterproofing, Tim Minard, Didi Wong, Minard Wong Foundation, National Monuments Foundation, and the Community Foundation for Northeast Georgia. The Dr. King statue is being commissioned by the National Monuments Foundation, Clyde and Sandra Strickland, Tim Minard, Lady Didi Wong, Minard Wong Foundation, and Social Investment Holdings, Inc. (SIH). Minard, Wong, and SIH are also sponsoring the statue’s India granite pedestal.
