Read a message from our Principal

Greetings, Sweetwater students, families, and community. I am Jay Nebel, the very proud principal of Sweetwater Middle School, the home of the best students, the best teachers, and the best community in all of Gwinnett County. I tell my students every day that I am their proud principal for two very simple reasons. We have the most amazing kids and the most amazing adults around. I am truly the luckiest principal in Gwinnett County because I have the honor every day of working with you and with your students.

Since Sweetwater Middle School opened in 1976, we have played an important role in the Lawrenceville community. We have been guided by strong leaders, supported by a community that wants the best for its future, and our classrooms have been populated with talented, caring teachers and world-class students. It fills me with a tremendous sense of thankfulness that I have the opportunity to be a part of such a school. This is also a great responsibility. Not only do I wish for our school to continue its great tradition, it is my hope that we can achieve at even higher levels and help our kids ascend to even greater heights. I am honored and humbled to be your partner as we work together to ensure that your child fulfills his or her immense potential. Thank you for allowing me to serve you, your students, and the Sweetwater community.

I am proud to say that I grew up in the metro Atlanta area. I am even more proud to say that I have worked with Gwinnett County Public Schools for 24 years. I have had the honor of serving as a teacher and basketball coach at Creekland Middle School and at Norcross High School. I was able to return to Creekland Middle School again in the role of assistant principal, and for three years now, I have served in the principal role here at Sweetwater. While my experiences as a proud employee of Gwinnett County Public Schools are diverse, they have made me the educator I am today. My ideals come from and are fueled by my experiences in Gwinnett County. I believe that all kids can achieve at high levels, I believe in the value of teamwork, I believe that every child, every family, and every community in Gwinnett has unlimited potential, and I believe that a school staffed with great people and supported by great families, can move a community forward.

I am also proud to tell you that I am the parent of two beautiful daughters. As a father, I feel fortunate that my kids have gone through Gwinnett County schools, have had great teachers and great administrators in their lives, and have been provided with a great education. I promise to do my best to provide you a similar experience. Please know that I view your kids as I want other educators to view my own daughters. It is my mission to provide your students with a world-class experience every day that they step into Sweetwater Middle and to make them feel that they are loved and supported, and that they can accomplish any goal that they set for themselves. I try to make and reflect upon my decisions through the lens of a parent; please know that I take your child's academics and their well-being seriously and that I will do all that I can to ensure that your child is safe and successful.

Sweetwater Middle School is truly the Promise of Gwinnett! By doing our best each day and by making decisions with our students’ best interests in mind, we can fulfill this promise. I invite you to partner with us and to share your thoughts and ideas for how we can continue to build on the great traditions and to lead our kids towards success here at Sweetwater. This is your school, and I hope that you will be an active part of it. Thank you again for the opportunity to lead our amazing school and for trusting your students with us. Being the principal of Sweetwater is the honor of a lifetime! I look forward to a very bright future for our kids, our school, and our community.
