Clear Backpack Pilot Program
To prioritize student safety, Gwinnett County Public Schools is excited to announce the launch of a clear backpack pilot program at select schools starting in January 2025. This pilot aims to increase visibility and create a more secure school environment for our students, and this pilot will help us understand how a clear backpack requirement might work across the district.
Clear Backpack Pilot Program Overview
Why a Clear Backpack Program?
Clear backpacks are already used to promote safety in places like stadiums and large event venues. For schools, they offer an additional way to keep students safe by deterring individuals from bringing prohibited items onto campus. While this idea has generated mixed feelings in our community, we want to explore it further to make an informed decision about the future of the Clear Backpack program.
How the Pilot Will Work
- Who’s Included: Selected elementary, middle, and high schools will participate.
- What’s Provided: Every student at these schools will receive a clear backpack from the district at no charge. GCPS will provide replacement bags if they are lost or damaged during the pilot. Families are welcome to purchase a clear backpack if they prefer, please see the FAQs below to learn more.
- When will this happen: Elementary School Pilot Programs: January 13 – February 7, 2025. Middle and High School Pilot Programs: January 6 – to January 31, 2025.
- Personal Items Allowed During the Pilot: Students are allowed to bring small personal items, like lunch boxes, pencil pouches, purses, instrument cases for music students, and athletic bags for athletes.
- Prohibited Backpack Requirements During the Pilot: Non-clear backpacks, such as mesh bags, will not be permitted during the pilot.

What Happens Next?
Principals at each participating school will share additional details about the pilot program, including distribution of clear backpacks in December. Families, please continue to check your school website, newsletters, ParentSquare, and social media for school-specific details and reminders.
We will gather feedback and data throughout the pilot to inform our decisions moving forward. Additionally, participating schools will track data to help determine the impact and effectiveness of the program.
By March 3, 2025, we will decide whether to move forward with a districtwide clear backpack policy for the 2025-26 school year.
